PIECES’ project in India was launched in 2018 and is therefore one of our newest engagements. Located in Dewas, Madhy Pradesh, India, Shishu Vihar Higher Secondary School is one of the oldest pioneering schools in Dewas. It aims to create a learning environment built up on three pillars: Academic excellence, student well-being and social responsibility. The school combines Indian and modern international education practices. It teaches math, biology and commercial subjects. The aim of Shishu Vihar Higher School is to provide education to children of socially and economically weaker sections, with the lowest possible tuition fees. The children especially lack the possibility to learn proper English writing and pronunciation. The city Dewas is located in western central India, close to Indore and Bhopal, neighbouring one of India’s most famous states Rajasthan.

PIECES’ volunteers teach English to classes from nursery to 12th grade. Furthermore, they introduce students to practical applications and techniques, such as searching study material on Google, using Salam Khan Academy (an interactive Youtube account that includes study material) or having group based discussions as well as learning on projects that foster social responsibility and the environmental development (e.g. tree plantation projects). Also, the volunteers have the possibility to work on the students’ soft skills, like promoting kindness and well-being in the classroom. By teaching the volunteers English and also focus on practical skills, we equip them with abilities to enhance their chances to get fairly paid job and have a better living standard in the future. The teaching times are from Monday to Saturday, in the morning and in the afternoon. Our volunteers live together with Roopa Patwardhan, the current president and owner of the school, whose parents funded the Shishu Vihar Higher Secondary School 67 years ago.

As the project in Dewas was just established recently and every PIECES project is funded individually, we need new sponsors and benefactors to finance the project! We guarantee that every donated penny directly flows into our project work (on site!). Only with your help, we can establish long time volunteering partnerships and truly create a sustainable impact!
