The project is located in Matarm, the capital of the Indonesian Island of Lombok. The university is currently under reconstruction, since the buildings have been severely damaged by the earthquake in the Summer of 2018. Therefore, the classes now take place in a provisional location. The university is specialized in the tourism sector. Students can choose between four different departments: food and beverage service, room service, culinary art and travel arrangement.
The Indonesian school system is often based on learning contents by heart, consequently also the English language. Thus, the students memorize certain phrases in English such as “Let me introduce myself, my name is…”. They can master their sentences but as one can expect, if the students are asked questions in another way than they studied them they often lack the capability to understand and answer the question. Additionally, the students are very shy and lack the self-confidence to speak up. Lombok is situated in the West of Bali. There are quite a lot of tourists traveling through Lombok. Therefore it is crucial for the tourism students to being able to communicate in English. The PIECES volunteers allow them to practice their English speaking capabilities and engage with other cultures. The goal of the volunteers is to make the students speak. To do so, they use different methods such as playing games, analysing and singing songs, teaching grammar topics, setting up small plays etc. The students are very curious and overcome their fear of talking in English through the playful methods. Additionally, they want to learn about foreign countries and cultures. For both, the students and the volunteers the project is very enriching
Even though people around the world are prone to different environments, they have more in common than one can imagine. It might be the pursuit of happiness or the admiration for the newest song of Robbie Williams or the fascination for Paris. But the most common thing is dreaming. Everyone has dreams, some might be bigger others smaller. For some their dreams are easier to achieve than for some harder. A lot of students studying subjects in tourism all around the world want to leave their country to work in places like Singapore or New York. The dream is the same, but the starting point another. While most Western students speak English fluently and going to university is just one of the many possibilities, the world in Indonesia looks quite differently. Going to uni is not just a thing you do for fun, but the chance to nourish a family. And speaking English is not just almost a given, but the result of years of commitment and self-motivation. Most teachers do not speak English very fluently, so the students have to teach themselves. For Indonesian people, speaking English can change their whole prospects for life and bring them much closer to making their dreams come true.
All your donations will directly go to the project. Through them, the students will be able to practice their English skills and overcome their shyness. This enormously raises their chances of getting a good job later in life and much better prospects to work outside of Indonesia. Additionally, your donations will be used to help rebuilding the facilities of the university. You therefore help bringing the students back to the normal routine and process the tragedy of the earthquake.
