Volunteering:
What will you do?
PIECES volunteers will be engaged in a teaching experience in the heart of rural Nepal. This will involve living and engaging with the Parewadada community and holding daily classes at the local public school, the Mahendra Mandir secondary school, counting about 400 students ranging from class 1 (2-3 year olds) to class 10 (14-15 year olds). After class, it is recommended to the volunteers to engage in extra-curricular activities with the students.
Apart from the teaching and living experience, you will also be able to participate in Nepali festivities, which will allow you to plunge deep into the cultural richness and diversity of Nepal.

You will face many challenges in this project: Apart from the heterogeneous level of English, the living conditions are very basic (e.g. no running water, bathroom in the garden, mosquitos and spiders). However, if you are ready for a real challenge and motivated to make the project a success, you will quickly adapt to your environment and make your entire experience a great one!

Where will you live?

The volunteers will be living directly in the quaint Parewadada community, situated on a hilltop in the rural district of Lamjung. The community consists of several micro-villages, interlinked by a dirt road, and surrounded by abundant nature. The hill is bordered by several larger villages that you can reach within a half hour’s walk.
The volunteers will be living with the Panta family. The house is situated at about 10 minutes walk away from the school. You will live in close proximity with the family members, including the children, with whom you will be able to exchange and discover a lot about Nepali culture.

Logistics:
  • Project Times: 4 weeks in August
  • Costs: PIECES covers the costs for board and lodging during the stay
  • Working hours: Classes from 10.15-16 p.m., not on Sundays. Occasional days-off due to festivities. Optional extra-curricular activities with the students (art classes, football, tutoring,…)
  • Prerequisites: Excellent English, willingness to engage with students and the community, adaptiveness, openness, capacity to live in very basic conditions, previous travelling or teaching experience
