READY TO
VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering requires a lot of effort and self-motivation, but in return it also offers unforgettable moments and enriching experiences. Getting to know a new culture and its people while passing on knowledge is possible when you volunteer with us at Pieces. Here you will find the most important information about the process from application to your volunteering experience.
VOLUNTEERING PROCESS.
1. APPLICATION PERIOD
Are you willing to make a difference and be part of a unique experience? Then sign up as a volunteer for one of our projects.
Apply by filling out the application form and uploading your CV and motivation letter, both in written English, in one PDF-File naming it "firstname.surname". Beside introducing yourself briefly (approx. one A4 page), please also mention one or two preferences regarding the project destination, as well as why you are interested in going to these countries.
Applying early can increase your chances of being selected!
2. SELECTION OF VOLUNTEERS
Convinced by your application and motivation, we will invite you to an interview. The goal is to test your English level and to get to know you as a person. We will also assess whether you are fit for teaching. The interview will take place in person at the University of St.Gallen.
3. BOOTCAMP
After receiving your volunteering contact and further travel information, you will be invited to the mandatory bootcamp. It takes place in person at the University St.Gallen. There you will receive the essential tools to effectively teach and communicate in a foreign environment. Former volunteers will give useful insights and personal advice for your specific project destination. Beside that, the bootcamp is the perfect moment to meet your volunteer team members.
4. VOLUNTEERING
After preparation in Switzerland, you are ready for volunteering. All dates will fall within the lecture-free period after the exams. However, projects take place at a specific time period and can be subject to change. Therefore we highly recommend applicants to keep all dates around the advertised ones open.
DISCLAIMER
PIECES is not a travel agency. We do not engage in “Voluntourism” but real volunteering, which requires volunteers to adapt to extremely precarious living conditions, discomfort, and enter foreign and sometimes hostile social environments dealing with serious issues. This is a risk of volunteering abroad and PIECES cannot issue any explicit safety guarantee or accept any kinds of liability. We are also not liable for organizing your trip and travel documentation – we are, of course, here to help, but you remain responsible.
While applying to one of our projects, you should keep in mind that you will be giving up many conveniences we are used to in Switzerland. While on the project site, you are likely to have limited access to hygiene appliances, medical help, electricity, and transportation. You will also work long teaching hours. Make sure you are able and willing to deal with these kind of problems if you apply for volunteering. It is an incredible, life-changing experience but it is not meant to be a holiday.
