ZAMBIA
LIVINGSTONE
The Challenge: Nekacheya is a private primary school in Livingstone run by Grace and Herbert Malambo. It currently operates across two sites, with the younger children in rudimentary buildings, some without proper windows or doors. Meals have to be delivered by car between the two buildings. Another building is under construction, partly due to PIECES. While English is the official language of instruction in Zambia, schools like Nekacheya Primary face severe resource constraints, including class sizes of 35 to 45 students sharing a single blackboard and rudimentary infrastructure
Our Action: Volunteers commit to a single class (pre-school to Grade 7) for a full month, teaching multiple subjects including English, math, science, and social studies. Primarily, it is the volunteer’s decision whether classes should be held in unison with the class teacher or alone. In our experience, volunteers who take on more are the ones who get the most out of the project.
The Impact: Beyond the classroom, volunteers drive operational improvements - such as digitizing exam papers - and lead fundraising initiatives, like the 2026 charity run that raised CHF 5,000 for new school buildings and student entry fees.
